You've never learnt to swim and you think it's far too late to start at your age... Think again, it's perfectly possible to start learning to swim after the age of 50 without feeling ridiculous!

Many older people don't know how to swim

Do you think you're the only one who can't cope with the aquatic environment? Have you ever asked the people around you? Because in reality, one Belgian in five can't swim! You see, you're not alone in this. The reason for this is that, in the past, municipal swimming pools were not as accessible as they are today and, consequently, swimming lessons were not very widespread either.

But perhaps you're worried that, simply through lack of practice, you no longer know how to stay afloat? In that case, you let your fears paralyse you and don't dare set foot near a pool... In short, your self-confidence is lacking.

Can you learn to swim after the age of 50?

Of course you can! Swimming lessons are available for beginners and more experienced swimmers who haven't practised for a long time. Given exclusively to adults, these swimming lessons help you tame the liquid element and put an end to any deep-rooted fears. You think the water will get in your nose, in your ears, that it won't support your weight... You'll quickly learn to feel at ease in a pool. Of course, this will involve a number of stages, such as discovering the depth of the water and floating on your back and stomach, but you'll soon be able to let yourself be carried along by the pressure of the water.

How long does it take to learn to swim?

Learning to swim as an adult takes longer than for children. On average, a senior citizen will need fifty hours of practice to feel completely at ease in an aquatic environment. At two hours a week, it will take you less than a year to be able to swim with complete peace of mind! Not so long, is it?

Overcoming your fear of water

Over time, certain fears linked to water may have developed in your subconscious. The courses are there to help you overcome them. Rest assured, you won't be thrown straight into the deep end! It's a taming process that will be carried out gently over the course of the sessions. Little by little, you'll see your fears diminish until they disappear completely!

Of course, if you think you've suffered a major trauma (drowning, etc.), take the time to discuss it with a psychologist before you start.

Improve your self-confidence

By setting yourself a challenge like this, you'll be able to boost your self-confidence! It's no secret that achieving things you thought impossible at your age is a real morale booster! So don't hesitate any longer and sign up for your nearest adult swimming class!
